WorldSSP points leader Aegerter gets Suzuki MotoGP™ test outing

Monday, 5 September 2022 15:45 GMT

The reigning WorldSSP Champion replaced 2020 MotoGP™ Champion Joan Mir for the two-day test at Misano

Whilst the FIM Supersport World Championship was enjoying a well-deserved summer break, one rider hasn’t had a chance to stop yet. Between the Czech Round at the end of July and the French Round this weekend, Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) took part in two MotoE™ weekends, including a title decider, and just days before the French Round got even busier as he replaced Joan Mir at the Team Suzuki Ecstar outfit at the two-day Misano test.

Aegerter raced at the Red Bull Ring and the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” in the MotoE™ World Cup on his way to claiming the title, securing it at Misano, as he goes in search of two titles in 2022. His build-up to the French Round will now start on Wednesday afternoon as he took the place of 2020 MotoGP™ Champion Mir at Misano at the factory Suzuki team during the two-day test.

The Swiss rider has plenty of experience in the MotoGP™ paddock having raced in Moto2™ between 2010 and 2020 as well as MotoE™ since 2020. The two-day test outing will add to Aegerter’s busy season after running a dual MotoE™ and WorldSSP programme as he tests the Suzuki GSX-RR machine alongside Alex Rins, one of the team’s regular riders. Mir missed the San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini Grand Prix through injury sustained at the Austrian Grand Prix after a highside at Turn 4 on the opening lap of the race.

Aegerter opened up on the opportunity, and the 31-year-old said: “This is big news for me and, for sure, a big opportunity - a dream to ride in the Suzuki Factory Team and test the bike. I’m super happy about it, and I want to say thank you to everyone who has made this happen. I also want to say thanks to my team, Ten Kate, in Supersport who have allowed me to take this chance. Riding a Factory MotoGP™ machine is something I’ve forever wanted to try, so I can’t wait to jump on the bike tomorrow and enjoy the opportunity.”

Team Suzuki Ecstar’s Shinichi Sahara, who is Project Leader, added: “Tomorrow we will have a special guest in the garage; Dominique Aegerter. Following his victory in the 2022 MotoE™ World Cup, he will ride the GSX-RR. Rather than a proper testing plan, this is just an opportunity for him to ride our bike. Having some fun on the MotoGP™ bike is not only a good way for him to show that he can be fast, but also, we can enjoy hearing a different rider's point of view.”

Come the end of the test for Aegerter, the Swiss rider set 33 laps with a lap time of a 1’33.907. The top time set by Ducati’s Francesco Bagnaia, who won on Sunday.
