Oettl graduates to WorldSBK with two-year Team GoEleven deal

Tuesday, 2 November 2021 15:00 GMT

After two seasons in WorldSSP as a regular podium contender, Philipp Oettl will compete for Team GoEleven in WorldSBK in 2022 and 2023

Another rookie will join the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship grid in 2022 with German rider Philipp Oettl linking up with Team GoEleven for the next two seasons following his two years in WorldSSP. Oettl has been a regular podium contender in WorldSSP and will hope to continue showing his pace as he steps up to WorldSBK next season.

Oettl joined WorldSSP in 2020 after six full years on the Moto3™ grid and a single season in Moto2™, claiming one Moto3™ victory in his six seasons and three podiums with a best Championship position of 10th recorded in 2017. Oettl did not score points in his sole Moto2™ campaign but bounced back from that in 2020 during his debut WorldSSP season.

Oettl claimed four podiums in his first campaign in the WorldSBK paddock with a best result of second coming in the penultimate race of the season, in Race 1 at Estoril. His podium form continued into 2021 with another seven visits to the rostrum under his belt but still chasing that first WorldSSP victory. Oettl claimed third in the Championship in 2020 and is currently fifth in 2021 as he looks to end the year on a high before moving into WorldSBK.

Before making his debut on the world stage, Oettl was showing his potential at a national level in both Spain and his native Germany. In 2010 and 2011, he finished fourth in the German 125cc championship as well as making his FIM CEV 125cc championship debut. He also impressed during the Red Bull Rookies Cup in his second season in 2011, claiming fourth place with two victories before repeating the championship position in 2012; in the same year, he also finished fourth in the FIM CEV Moto3™ championship.

Discussing his move to WorldSBK onboard the Ducati Panigale V4 R, Oettl said: “I am very happy that after two successful seasons in the World Supersport Championship, I can make the step to WorldSBK with GoEleven! I hope that I can learn fast, I think that this is possible with a good group of people, and with GoEleven I have all the possibilities to achieve good results. From the outside, GoEleven was my desired Team, almost from the beginning of the 2022 deals. I can't wait to start this experience on the big bike, to learn as much as possible, to start next season and to improve Round by Round. I am happy to ride the Ducati, it's a great manufacturer and I really wanted this opportunity in Superbike, especially considering the successful past Ducati had!”

Denis Sacchetti, Team Manager at Team GoEleven, explained that signing 25-year-old Oettl met the philosophy of the team. He said: “Philipp achieved very good results in the last two seasons in Supersport, he is young and already has experience in Moto2™ and Moto3™, then, after having met him personally he gave me excellent sensations. He is a very determined rider and already has a good working method, certainly transmitted by his father Peter, great protagonist of the past of motorcycling; this is certainly an added value, which will help both us and him. This project gives me great excitement, it is certainly an amazing challenge, I can't wait to see him on our V4 R and start working with him. At GoEleven we are all happy to have him with us, it reflects a bit our philosophy, to believe in young people and give them an opportunity to show their potential in the main category. Philipp has amply demonstrated that he deserves the top class of the World Superbike!”

Giovanni Ramello, Team Owner, added: "The GoEleven Team, with the entry of Oettl, is back on its path and in its DNA, a young rider and a programme over several years that will allow us to grow together and try to achieve good results. I always followed Oettl’s performances since he was in WorldSSP and I must say that many times he impressed me positively for the grit, the riding style and the strong competitiveness he has always put in every race. We will try to do everything possible to maintain the high level of performance of the bike and be able to demonstrate our skills; we must do the races with the spirit of GoEleven, professionalism but also moments of fun. I am convinced that without particular pressures Oettl, will be able to make us appreciate his skills and excite us at every race, also reaping the benefits of the great experience gained over the years, despite the young age. I wish him to finish the World Supersport Championship with excellent results and I can't wait to get back to work for 2022!"
