After seeing his FIM Supersport World Championship lead cut last time out in the Czech Republic, Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) doubled up on victories at the Circuito de Navarra as he responded to extend his lead at the top of the standings with two more wins, taking his total for his rookie 2021 campaign to eight wins from 12 wins following the Pirelli Navarra Round.

Aegerter was made to work hard for both victories in Navarra as he fell back off the line in both races, finding himself pushed down the lead group with the Swiss rider having to battle his way back through the field to claim Race 1 and Race 2 honours. In Race 2, with the Red Flags shown on Lap 15, Aegerter made his move for the lead on Steven Odendaal (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) as he passed the South African rider on Lap 14.

It means rookie Aegerter takes a 47-point lead into the next round of the Championship at Magny-Cours as he looks to become the second rookie in a row to claim the WorldSSP Championship, following on from the success of Andrea Locatelli who now competes in WorldSBK with the Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK squad.

Reflecting on the Navarra Round where Aegerter took 50 points out of a possible 50, Aegerter said: “I think it was the perfect weekend for me. I took all the points I could with the fastest lap and pole position. A really hot weekend and in Race 2 we showed again some good battles. My start was a little bit better but then I got in the fight with a few riders. It was a hard battle to get back out in front and then close the gap to Steven. It was not that easy to overtake him, but soon I could make a small gap between him and me, I was very consistent.”

In Race 2, Aegerter got shuffled down the order from the start to fifth place before fighting back to third on the opening lap. On Lap 5, he moved up into second place after overtaking Simon Jespersen (Kallio Racing) before chasing down Odendaal, eventually passing the South African on the last full lap of racing.

Explaining his battle through the field, Aegerter said: “I know that I’m fast and consistent. We have nearly no drop on the tyres. I can still be very fast at the end and make good lap times. We are fast in a different way to the others. Maybe they have some advantages in the first five or six laps. Maybe they also risk much more or use the tyre earlier. I just try to be in front but it’s not that easy to overtake on the straight out of the slipstream. This is why I struggled a little bit when I’m in a group.”
