How can Locatelli win the WorldSSP title on Sunday?

Friday, 18 September 2020 16:54 GMT

Fourth place in Race 1 means Locatelli will have to wait to be crowned World Champion but it can happen on Sunday

After a rainstorm disrupted Race 1 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Andrea Locatelli (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Team) will have to wait to be crowned the 2020 World Champion in the FIM Supersport World Championship but he gets a second chance to clinch the title in Sunday’s Race 2 for the Acerbis Catalunya Round.

Locatelli needs to leave Catalunya with a 100-point margin to his nearest rivals, currently Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) and Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), if he is to be crowned World Champion on Sunday. He is currently 92 points clear of Cluzel and 99 points ahead of Mahias heading into Sunday’s action.

In order to be crowned Champion on Sunday, Locatelli will need to score eight points to move himself 100 points clear of Cluzel, who is not racing due to injury, and outscore Mahias by one point. He will then be 100 points clear of both riders with 100 points available but Locatelli will be crowned Champion by virtue of having more “best results” – Locatelli has nine wins so far in 2020 while Cluzel and Mahias have zero, meaning they will not be able to catch him on the “best results” regulation.

For this to happen, Locatelli will need to finish inside the top eight – eighth place in a race scores eight points – while finishing ahead of Mahias. This will ensure he cannot be caught by his rivals in the Championship standings.
