The Dutchman topped FP2 but was left with several injuries after a late crash

Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Team) will be forced to miss the rest of the Pata Riviera di Rimini Round after suffering multiple injuries in a chilling Free Practice 2 crash. The Dutchman was launched into the air at Turn 16 just as the session came to an end, moments after setting the fastest lap of the day.

Van der Mark was immediately taken to the Medical Centre and shortly after to Rimini hospital. According to the early examinations, the Jerez Race 2 winner suffered several injuries in the crash, including a concussion, fractures to his right ribs and a fractured right wrist, which his team has confirmed will require surgery.

The Dutchman was second in FP1 before a late fast lap pushed him up into P1 in the afternoon, eight thousandths of a second ahead of Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). The accident occurred shortly after at Turn 16, the last corner of Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, with red flags ending the session immediately.

Yamaha has also confirmed via Twitter that van der Mark will remain under observation at Rimini hospital for the next 24 hours as a precautionary measure. The timetable for his recovery is not yet known.
