Reigning world champion takes pole position and victory Down Under

In a phenomenal opening FIM Supersport World Championship race in Australia, Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) was able to begin his title defence in style as he won the race from pole position.

Storming off of pole position around the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, the French rider was able to get into a stunning lead and was confidently leading the pack. However once the red flags were waved, a quick restart procedure was implemented and riders were to prepare for a nine lap sprint. With another stunning start and a cool head, Mahias replicated his performance and was able to get into a stunning lead, and crossed the line with a dominating margin.

Mahias explains his thoughts: “In my head I was ready for the flag to flag and I had a good strategy. It was easy for me and I was fast straight away. I was able to get into the lead in front of the group, and after the red flag my strategy was to push in the beginning. In the test this week I didn’t do the long run, so I wasn’t sure of my pace but my strategy was to push a lot and to manage my tyre at the end. I am happy with the result and thank you to my team.”
