There was something for everyone in WorldSBK’s return from the summer break

The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship made its triumphant return from the summer break this weekend, rolling into the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve for Round 10 of the season. The rollercoaster track always produces some fine racing and this weekend was no different, with two championships on the line and a host of amazing battles.

Portimao is one of our riders’ favourite circuits to race at due to its undulating nature. To fully appreciate how special and challenging this track is, hop onboard with the king of Portimao, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and discover the best hidden secrets of the 4.5km circuit.

Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) faced the Nolan Portuguese Round with some uncertainty after suffering two shoulder injuries during the summer break. The Welshman was finally cleared to race and pushed as hard as always, although he would have been forgiven for having second thoughts after a scary crash during FP3.

Saturday kicked off with Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia) grabbing his first Tissot Superpole in five years in stunning fashion. Things quickly turned south for the Irishman, however, as a crash with Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) ended his Race One early. Jonathan Rea took control of that race inside the first lap and claimed a fantastic sixth win at Portimao.

Following his amazing comeback in Race One – jumping from 14th on the grid to 4th at the flag – Davies started Race Two from pole and seeking a return to the top of the rostrum. But Jonathan Rea had other ideas, passing the Welshman after several laps of bickering and sensational overtakes. Catch the best moments from that battle here, and don’t miss out on the full highlights from Race Two.

The FIM Supersport World Championship always produces exciting races, but nobody was quite ready for what was brought to the table at Portimao. First, Sandro Cortese (Kallio Racing) and Jules Cluzel (NRT) took a tumble inside the second lap, with the Frenchman being forced to abandon through no fault of his own. Then, race leader Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) suffered a puncture going into the final lap. What happened next needs to be seen to be believed: catch the full highlights here.

Ana Carrasco (DS Junior Team) had the chance to make history and win her first FIM Supersport 300 World Championship at Portimao, but the Spanish rider struggled and the title will be decided in two weeks’ time at Magny-Cours, after Scott Deroue’s (Motoport Kawasaki) impressive win.
