Frenchman secures first WorldSSP victory in Spain

Winning a race is always something to be proud of, but winning a race as close as the World Supersport race at the Pirelli Aragon Round was something Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) was thrilled with.

With a plan to follow the other riders around the Spanish circuit in the early stages of the race, the French rider was able to skilfully workout how to take an advantage on the closing laps, following a tense battle. Crossing the line with an advantage of 0.014s ahead of Sheridan Morias (Kallio Racing), Mahias took his first win of 2017 in stunning style.

"It was pretty crazy but I was fighting a lot,” explains the Frenchman. “I had a good strategy, in the beginning it was to follow all the riders and with a lot of wind it was tricky with the race. I am very happy as in the race I was fast in the last corner and Sheridan doesn't have a lot of confidence in the corner, and the win is good for me and for the team. It was good for the championship. “

Despite a tough start to the weekend, he was able to pull it out of the bag on race day: “At the beginning of the weekend I wasn’t confident, I had a lot of problems during FP1 and FP2. I was fast in the race and this is important to me, last year I was a World Champion in endurance racing and in this race I was very consistent. After the opening two rounds, for me it is very important to win the race.”

Discussing his championship lead, Mahias explains it is still only early days: “There’s only been three races but from the winter it has been my target; I am not here to finish fifth or sixth in the championship. For the moment my championship position is good, especially after I had a lot of problems in Australia and Thailand, but we must remember it’s a long season.”

Frenchman Mahias will lead the WorldSSP charge into Round Four, as the paddock heads to The Netherlands at the legendary TT Circuit Assen. To re-live any of the highlights of the stunning WorldSSP races so far, sign up to our VideoPass for all 2017 content.
