Sepang Tissot-Superpole won by Tom Sykes

Saturday, 1 August 2015 07:48 GMT

Sykes, Torres and Guintoli will start from the front row in both races tomorrow.

The 10th Tissot-Superpole of the 2015 eni FIM Superbike World Championship season was claimed in emphatic style by Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Racing Team) after a tense Superpole 2 in 34 degrees heat at the 5.543km Sepang International circuit.

Courtesy of 2.03.240s, the fastest lap of the weekend, the British rider notched up his 28th career WorldSBK Pole Position.

As anticipated following FP4, Superpole 1 saw Matteo Baiocco (Althea Racing) and Alex Lowes (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) progress into the Pole Position shoot-out where they claimed 10th and 5th on the grid for tomorrow’s two 16 lap races. Baiocco’s time during the first 15 minute encounter (2.04.380s) was almost identical to that of Jordi Torres in FP3 (the fastest of the weekend ahead of Superpole).

Alongside Sykes on the front row will be Jordi Torres (Aprilia Racing Team – Red Devils) who claimed a 2nd successive front row start after Laguna Seca and Sylvain Guintoli who is back on the front row, his first of the season and with Pata Honda.

Max Biaggi (Aprilia Racing Team) improved with his final lap to ensure he heads row 2, ahead of Lowes and Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati SBK Team).

Row three of the grid comprises Jonathan Rea who wrestled his Kawasaki to 7th, Leon Haslam (Aprilia Racing Team) and Niccolo Canepa (Althea Racing)

Row four will see Baiocco, Randy de Puniet (Voltcom Crescent Suzuki) with as it stands Italian Ayrton Badovini in 12th, the BMW Motorrad Italia rider has however been declared unfit and will take no further part in the weekend after his crash in FP4.

The 5th row of the grid currently has Michael van der Mark (Pata Honda World Superbike Team) in 13th, the Dutchman visibly annoyed with Baiocco on track during the slow down lap of Superpole 1 although why we do not know. Leon Camier put the MV Agusta Reparto Corse machine into 14th ahead of Roman Ramos (Team Go Eleven).

Tomorrow’s opening race is scheduled to start at 1330 local time.
