Fernandez: "Winning the title at Jerez is not a must"

Friday, 5 September 2014 08:30 GMT

The young Spaniard wants to keep focused on the single race.

The Pata European Junior Cup points leader Augusto Fernandez (WIL Sport) is currently contesting the penultimate event of the one make, entry level series powered by Honda knowing he might clinch the title already on Sunday.

The 16 year old rider, about to turn 17 on September 23rd, was runner up in 2013 behind Jake Lewis. This  year he further stepped up his game by winning four races out of six, with his “worst” result being a fourth place in the opening round.

Fernandez leads the standings with a 27 point advantage over his only rival left in contention, fellow Javier Orellana (Europ Food S.L.).

WorldSBK.com spoke to the Spanish rider after the start of his home round.

It has been a spectacular season so far for you. How do you think you could make a difference?
“I think that having raced last year has definitely helped me a lot. In 2013 there were many potential title winners and the racing was really close. It has been king of the same this year, but I feel I could manage every race just a bit better. When there are eight riders battling for the win, race craft is crucial. So yes, the experience is the key.”

How did you enjoy the summer break?
“I never stopped training, I worked with my father in the Escuela Balear del Deporte (EBE), which is a school of sports planning. From Portimao onwards we started getting ready for Jerez simply by training and training.”

With a good result at Jerez you could be crowned champion with one round to go. Did you expect such a good season?
“I ended up in the runner up spot last year and built speed upon speed during the last part of the year. I hoped to get a better start of the season at Aragon but things went much better from there onwards. We have reached a good level by taking one race at the time. We need to be fully focused and not try to  necessarily win the title here at Jerez, because there one more round.”

Will you aim for the win at Jerez?
“I need not to think about this round as my home event. We don’t have to be champion here at any cost, as I already said there is still one more race to go. A DNF would be devastating as Javi (Orellana) would bridge the gap. Of course I would like to win, but it is not a must.”

What are your plans for next season? Where would you like to race?
“The EJC winner gets a free ride in the FIM Europe Superstock 600 Championship with Honda. I would evaluate other options if there will be any, but the prize for the winner is a great one. The winner will also do a test with the Pata Honda World Supersport Team astride van der Mark’s CBR600RR. That’s a great chance to show your potential.”
